Best upcoming Nintendo Switch games to look forward to in 2021

The Nintendo Switch has proven to be a very capable competitor to the PS4 and Xbox One, while offering something else besides - portability. It's still just as impressive now that the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S have launched, too.

And, with the Nintendo Switch Lite also going great guns, plus the Nintendo Switch (OLED model) on the way, there are a ton of fans looking for the best games to buy.

That's why we've gathered a list of the upcoming Switch games we've got our own beady eyes on. You can find them in chronological order â€" soonest first â€" and with trailers for each.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania

  • Release date: 5 October 2021
  • Switch exclusive? No, also on PS5, PS4, Xbox and PC
  • Publisher: SEGA

The first three Super Monkey Ball games are getting remastered, and they'll be releasing on Switch alongside just about every other console. These brilliant balance-based platformers are some of the best fun you can have in a plastic ball, so we're looking forward to rolling back in.

Metroid Dread

  • Release date: 8 October 2021
  • Switch exclusive? Yes
  • Publisher: Nintendo

We were all waiting on Metroid Prime 4, but Nintendo had a throwback Metroid surprise in store at E3 2021. Dread is a 2D sidescroller like the Metroids of old and looks like it's going to be terrific, creepy fun when it comes out soon.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

  • Release date: 19 November 2021
  • Switch exclusive? Yes
  • Publisher: Nintendo

These upcoming remakes of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl look absolutely brilliant, updating the graphics of the classic DS titles but retaining their art style, and letting a whole new generation of players enjoy their story.

They're from the true heyday of the franchise, in our opinion, so we can't wait to sink back into the Sinnoh region and explore everything all over again.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp

  • Release date: 3 December 2021
  • Switch exclusive? Yes
  • Publisher: Nintendo

Two of the very best turn-based strategy games ever made, this package will bring remasters of both Advance Wars titles from the Game Boy Advance days. They've got a beautiful updated look which actually brings the same sort of polish as the Pokémon remasters above. We'll certainly be strapping in to lead the troops when it comes out.

Hollow Knight: Silksong

  • Release date: 2021
  • Switch exclusive? No
  • Publisher: Team Cherry

Hollow Knight: Silksong is an upcoming Metroidvania action-adventure video game that's the sequel to 2017's award-winning Hollow Knight. You'll be journeying to all new lands with special powers to battle the bug hordes. It has been suggested that this game will launch in June but there's no official word yet.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus

  • Release date: 28 January 2022
  • Switch exclusive? Yes
  • Publisher: Nintendo

This looks like a fairly radical new entry in the mainline Pokémon series - it's a flashback to a feudal-style time, where players will explore Sinnoh for the first time, compiling its first ever Pokédex as they go.

It looks like we'll have a true open world to explore, without boundaries and restrictions, and the new time setting looks absolutely gorgeous so far. It's a way off release, but this could be a special moment in the franchise's history if it comes off.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land

  • Release date: Spring 2022
  • Switch exclusive? Yes
  • Publisher: Nintendo

It's a big switch-up for Kirby at long last - as the pink little sucker gets a fully open-world 3D game for us to explore. It's set in what looks like a much friendlier post-apocalypse than games generally offer up, and it looks like a vibrant good time.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2

  • Release date: 2022
  • Switch exclusive? Yes
  • Publisher: Nintendo

Although we don't yet know the official name, we're happy to see that the sequel to one of the most popular games on Switch is getting a sequel. That's right The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild is getting another outing. It's aiming for a 2022 release date at present, after cropping up again during E3 2021.

Bayonetta 3

  • Release date: 2022
  • Switch exclusive? Yes
  • Publisher: Nintendo

Bayonetta 3 was announced way back in 2017, but it took until September 2021 for us to finally see something concrete, and indeed some gameplay. The above trailer confirms that it's going to be just as bombastic and fantastic as the last two games, and it's set to release in 2022.

Splatoon 3

  • Release date: 2022
  • Switch exclusive? Yes
  • Publisher: Nintendo

A third game in the fan-favourite ink-shooting series, Splatoon 3 will be a much-needed multiplayer offering for the Switch when it comes out in 2022. That said, it'll also have a great campaign to enjoy, called The Return of the Mammalians, and it looks like furry mammals will be returning to the game's world.

Metroid Prime 4

  • Release date: TBC
  • Switch exclusive? Yes
  • Publisher: Nintendo

Nintendo announced a new instalment of Metroid Prime, this time for Switch, during its E3 2017 Spotlight presentation but few other details have emerged in more than a year. We do know though that Bandai Namco is working on the game as its development studio.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

  • Release date: 2022
  • Switch exclusive? No
  • Publisher: EA

Another potentially awesome Lego Star Wars game. This one will let you play through all nine Star Wars saga films in a single game. Expect the usual humour, plenty of adventures and all your favourite Star Wars characters too.
