What's in the new Fortnite update? Chapter 2 Season 8: Cubed

One of the major strengths of Fortnite compared to other battle royale and service games is how regularly it's updated with new content and other changes - it genuinely keeps things fresh and gives the impression of involvement with the community on Epic's part.

Players of other BR games (we're looking at you, Warzone) would love the same frequent updates and retuning, but it can be a little hard to keep track of what's actually going to be joining the game in the latest drop, and when it's coming. That's why we've gathered the intel for you, right here - see what's just been added!

When did the Fortnite update come out?

The latest Chapter update dropped on 13 September 2021, and is now live across all timezones and platforms, so you should be able to update your game to the latest version and hope in for yourself already.

Players are able to jump in. Chapter 2 Season 8: Cubed is now available! https://t.co/NCQlVfBEO8

What's new in the Fortnite update?

This new season of Fortnite is bringing with it an eery new factor for the map, in the form of the Sideways - pockets of dark and monster-filled malevolence summoned by the cubes that have fallen around the map, from the mothership that was previously up in the sky.

Where exactly the Sideways opens up will change each game, so you might find that it's on your favourite dropzone, or you might be clear for a quieter landing, depending on your luck!

Sideways weapons

There are good reasons to plunge into Sideways Zones, though, besides just a bit of sightseeing - there are rewards to be plundered in them. For one thing, as you defeat Cube Monsters in the zones, you'll earn Sideways Weapons that are powerful allies.

Monsters will also drop crafting parts to upgrade these weapons, and the Sideways Rifle and Sideways Minigun both have overcharge options that deal more damage if you keep firing them just below the threshold of them overheating.

Cooperation

Another new change is the addition of shared funds for players to donate their bars to - to decide where on the island auto-turrets should be built to protect them from mobs. It's a fun little experiment that will let the players decide what change comes next.

Epic has also indicated that this is a precedent that should be followed by players helping to choose what weapons might be added into rotation next.

Battle pass

Of course, as with any new season there's a huge new battle pass for players to unlock and progress through, featuring a whole heap of skins, emotes and more. The headline addition this time is probably Venom's even-more-evil twin Carnage, from the world of Spider-Man, but there's loads of other shiny stuff to take a look at.
