Standard 1080p Blu-ray players aren't particularly expensive in 2026, but that wasn't always the case. When the home video format first hit the scene in 2006, compatible hardware cost an arm and a leg. When the PlayStation 3 launched with native Blu-ray support, for example, it resulted in an MSRP that was much higher than the DVD-clad Xbox 360.
