When I was a youngster, I loved video games (and still do). But over the years, I'd often hear my mother refer to my games as "the Nintendo" even if the machine involved was a PlayStation or Sega console. Nintendo quickly established themselves at the beginning of the video game home market as industry leaders. For the uninitiated, the brand name became synonymous with all home console gaming, particularly for 90s moms. You might not think about it, but everyday household brands have generic terms for an entire market. Kleenex, Band-Aid, Chapstick, Crock-Pot and Tupperware are actually brand names, not terms for generic items. Even in the modern age, we've seen that happen in other corners of technology. Kindle fulfills that role for the entire market of e-readers.
