Almost every piece of surround sound advice starts from the same assumption: that the walls belong to you. Run the cable through the drywall, cut a neat rectangle for the in-wall driver, and put the subwoofer wherever it measures best. That's fine if you own the place. If you rent, most standard guidance turns into a list of things you're not allowed to do, and even the good home theater tricks for small spaces often stop at a soundbar.
