Best PS5 games 2021: Amazing PlayStation 5 titles to pick up

The PlayStation 5 is getting into its groove, now - Sony's next-generation console brings a brand-new controller (DualSense) and the power to make games that look miles better than anything we've seen on a console before.

It might still be relatively young for a console, but there are already a host of superb games to pick up for the PS5, between true next-gen experiences and some of the highlights of the last generation running better than ever before. We've gathered the very best for you, right here.

Best shooters

Returnal

squirrel_widget_3753074

A game that came out of nowhere for some people, Returnal is a superbly atmospheric rogue-like third-person shooter. You play as a stranded scientist, Selene, who is stuck in a time loop on a ridiculously hostile alien planet.

It's beautiful to look at, makes superb use of the Dualsense controller, and has absolutely loads of systems to master. It's also tough as nails, so if you've finished Demon's Souls and need another challenge this'll be right up your street.

Call of Duty: Warzone

Warzone is still huge, and even with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War new on the scene, the free-to-play battle royale game will be our first-person shooter of choice for the PS5, where you can take advantage of higher-resolution textures to play with a new sharpness.

There's loads of content still to come for the mode, including a long-awaited new map at some point we hope, so there's no time like the present to take your first airdrop into Verdansk.

The Last of Us Part 2

A swan song for the PlayStation 4, The Last of Us Part 2 is a masterpiece of storytelling and gut-churning action, and we loved every minute of it on the PS4. Our console, though, seemed to hate it, running the hottest and loudest we ever saw it.

If you want to try Naughty Dog's latest effort without a console's fans drowning out the sound, get it running on your PS5 and you'll have a way smoother and more enjoyable experience, trust us.

Hitman 3

The superb conclusion to the most recent trilogy of Hitman games, Hitman 3 looks absolutely beautiful on next-gen, with gorgeous detail and cracking lighting making levels look vibrant and lived-in. You once again take on the role of Agent 47 as he tries to unravel the secrets implied by past games.

If you want a bit of stealth action, and levels that are almost endlessly replayable with different playstyles, this is a great option. In fact, levels don't really get much more intricately designed than this in almost any game, so be sure to savour it!

Resident Evil Village

The latest Resident Evil game is an absolute blast, whether it's frightening the pants off you, or letting you rip with a wide arsenal of weaponry. It's got genuinely terrifying segments, and a story that's absolutely ludicrous fun.

It looks beautiful on PS5, too, with stunning lighting and super-sharp resolutions lending it a clear next-gen sheen, all the while sticking to a nice high frame rate.

Best role-playing games (RPGs)

Demon's Souls

squirrel_widget_3659849

It might be a remake, but this is an unbelievable update to the FromSoftware game that started the Soulslike genre off - a fantastical world peopled by terrifying and dangerous opponents that you must explore oh-so-carefully.

The visuals are astonishing, and anyone who played the original knows to expect some of the most memorable locations and battles in all of gaming. It's a treat for new PS5 owners.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla

squirrel_widget_3662027

The latest in one of gaming's most titanic franchises, Valhalla is a superb Viking adventure through Norway and England. Playing as Eivor, you'll lead your people to freedom and settle new lands, while exploring a twisty and memorable story.

The game is absolutely at its best on next-gen, too, with smooth frame rates and much-improved visuals making it a really great showcase of what we can all expect from the PS5 going forward.

Best adventure and platforming games

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales

squirrel_widget_2682683

The first Spider-Man game from Insomniac was an absolute blast, and we've got a quick follow-up in the form of Miles Morales, taking on the suit and bringing his own new set of powers to the party.

The visuals are amped up and look simply stunning, while the textbook swinging-and-fighting action is just as fun as last time out, and that's a heck of a good thing.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

squirrel_widget_4159365

Insomniac has somehow already got two games on this list - its PS5-exclusive Ratchet & Clank game is just as joyful to play as Miles Morales. It's also even more astonishingly pretty, with visuals that seriously make you feel like you've finally arrived in the next generation.

There are beautiful worlds to explore, as zany a lineup of weapons as ever to have fun with, and it all loads up almost instantaneously thanks to tight integration with the PS5's hardware. You absoltutely have to give this one a proper try.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

squirrel_widget_3659830

Sackboy might not quite have the mascot name-recognition of a Mario or Master Chief, but Sony's keen to fix that, and this charming platformer is a solid shout in that regard.

It sees you guide the little ragamuffin through loads of themed levels, jumping around and evading peril all the way, with a really nice cartoony sense of fun and visual flair. A great family outing for the new console.

The Pathless

This hidden gem looks absolutely sumptuous on the PS5, all primary colours and wonderful smooth motion (we'd play it using the 60FSP mode if we were you). You play a hunter who can zoom around the world using her bow to time shots for speed boosts, and it has a wonderful sense of discovery at its core. You're left to your own devices to explore the land before you, clearing it of puzzles and obstacles in your own time and order.

Best racing and sports games

Dirt 5

squirrel_widget_3274464

Dirt 5 is the first true next-gen racer and brings a range of amazing cars and courses for you to enjoy, harking back to the series' glory days of Dirt 2 with a light, fun feel.

On PS5 you can play at 120Hz (if your TV allows for it) to enjoy supreme smoothness and total control, while its integration with the DualSense controller is also something that you have to experience to really appreciate. It's a great way to scratch that racing itch on PS5.

FIFA 21

squirrel_widget_332797

Another year, another FIFA game - but this one benefits from the PS5's added power with much-improved graphics. It also uses the Dualsense controller to give you way more feedback during a game, which can actually get a little distracting. It might not change huge amounts, but FIFA 21 is another really accomplished football game.

Rocket League

Free to play and completely addictive, this sports and racing hybrid is absolutely brilliant in motion. It might look simple, but you'll soon discover that mastering its physics-based systems is a lifetime job. Ranked play means that you'll never be out of your depth, though, and we think it's a must-have for playing with your friends online.

Best Indie games

Disco Elysium: The Final Cut

Perhaps the most astonishingly well-written RPG we've ever played, Disco Elysium is a superb detective game that'll have you gasping with delight at the audacity of its writing and voice acting. You're free to play however you want, far more so than in more mainstream games, and some of the niche outcomes this can lead to are genuinely breathtaking.

It's got a unique art style, superb voice acting and really has to be played more than once, so that you can adequately start to understand just how ambitious it really is.

Outer Wilds

Another game that absolutely floored us with how well it accomplished its ambitions, Outer Wilds lets you explore a solar system to work out just what on earth's going on with its timekeeping. What makes it so special, though, is how organically it all unfolds, letting you follow your intuitions and insights to figure out where you need to go next without holding your hand. Its puzzles are ingenious and its narrative is soothing - you really have to play this game.

Hades

squirrel_widget_4981023

One of the best games of recent years is now available on PS5, and it's just as good as ever. With beautiful hand-drawn visuals to match a frenetic pace, this roguelike is set in the titular land of the dead, as you try to break out by running a gauntlet of randomly-generated rooms full of enemies. It's brilliant fun with randomised builds and layouts keeping things fresh and superbly-written dialogue keeping you engaged.

The Forgotten City

squirrel_widget_5872676

An intriguing mystery game, The Forgotten City asks you to figure out why a hidden ancient Roman enclave is getting turned to gold against their will anytime anyone commits a sin, and along the way you'll meet a great cast of characters. It's free-form and interesting, with loads of twists, and well worth checking out if you fancy a good yarn.
