Apple will hold its annual developer conference again this summer.
WWDC 2022 is scheduled to kick off in June, making it the 33rd Worldwide Developers Conference. It's once again an all-online affair, with no physical gathering due to the COVID-19 pandemic. WWDC 2020 and WWDC 2021 were both held digitally for the same reason. However, unlike those years, Apple plans to hold a separate viewing for developers and students at Apple Park to watch the keynote and other presentations. Space will be limited, of course.
Here are all the details about how to watch online, how to apply to attend the special viewing, and what to expect from the multi-day event.
What is WWDC?
Every year, usually in the summer, Apple holds a developer conference to announce upcoming major software updates to all its platforms. Sometimes it also previews new hardware. All the consumer-facing announcements are made during a Day One keynote that is live-streamed online, although Apple tends to hold other presentations for developers and students to watch. The idea behind the entire conference is to get developers up to speed on Apple's latest developments so that they can adequately prepare and update their apps. It also signals to partners what Apple has coming down the pike.Â
When is WWDC 2022?
WWDC 2022 starts Monday 6 June and ends Friday 10 June.
The main keynote happened will happen on Day One (6 June) at 10am PDT (1pm EDT/6pm BST/7pm CEST).
How to watch WWDC 2022
Apple will live-stream its main keynote on YouTube. Pocket-lint plans to embed the video player at the top of this page once it becomes available. Below are some additional ways you will be able to watch it.
Following the keynote, Apple will also host State of the Union presentations for developers and students. Details about these sessions will be made available at a later date, including how to attend them in person.
What to expect from WWDC 2022
Apple is expected to introduce upcoming major software updates to all its platforms. That means we should see early demos of iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS 13, tvOS 16, and watchOS 9. After unveiling these software updates, Apple will likely offer beta previews for developers to test ahead of their full release.
As for hardware announcements, those have become increasingly rare at WWDC. But you never know - there are rumours the company could introduce its long-rumoured AR/VR headset, to give developers a chance to create experiences for the device in advance of its launch.Â

What happened at WWDC 2021?
Last year, Apple announced the following updates:
FaceTime: Kicking off its announcement of iOS 15, Apple announced a major update to FaceTime, likely in an effort to better compete with Zoom and other video calling services that exploded in popularity over the past year. As a result, it's developed new features for FaceTime, such as spatial audio, voice isolation, ‌FaceTime‌ Links, and SharePlay. FaceTime is also coming to the web, so Android and Windows PC users can finally use it.
iOS 15: Apple unveiled a wealth of new features for its iPhone operating system. The new features were designed with the intent of helping users stay connected, find focus, and explore the world, said Apple SVP Craig Federighi. Beyond FaceTime improvements, iOS 15 is gaining a new notification experience including Notification Summary, a new Focus feature, Love text, updates to Photos and Apple Wallet, and more.
iPadOS 15: After announcing iOS 15 at WWDC 2021, Apple also discussed its operating system update for iPads. It will add a much-requested feature to iPad when iPadOS 15 releases later this year; you will finally be able to use widgets on the home screen. As well as widgets, Apple is finally adding the App Library to iPad too. Several other new features will be coming with iPadOS 15. Better multitasking is one, for example.
MacOS 12 Monterey: Alongside its other software updates, Apple introduced the latest version of macOS: MacOS Monterey, or version 12. Safari has been given an overhaul in the update, plus you can AirPlay to your Mac from your iPhone or iPad. A new Universal Control feature is coming, too, plus you will be able to drag a file from the iPad to a Mac or even a second Mac if they're all connected to iCloud.
WatchOS 8: Apple announced watchOS 8, the latest version of its smartwatch platform for the Apple Watch. The new software follows last year's watchOS 7. It includes a new Mindfulness app, an extension of the Breathe app that tells you to breathe throughout the day. The Fitness app is getting more workout types for tai chi and pilates, and the Home app is getting redesigned, among other updates.
